It’s no big secret that mercury is highly poisonous, and that exposure to mercury should be avoided at all costs. Why, then, do dentists keep putting mercury fillings in their patient’s teeth?
Mercury fillings – sometimes called “silver fillings,” “metal fillings” or “amalgam fillings” – are incredibly toxic. Mercury fillings continuously emit mercury vapor, which is absorbed into the body in small amounts. But those “small amounts” can really add up when you have fillings in your mouth leeching mercury vapor into your body every day for one, five, twenty or even fifty years!
Mercury exposure has been linked to serious medical conditions ranging from mental confusion and fogginess to birth defects, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases and many other illnesses. Cognitive functions in particular are negatively affected by mercury exposure.
You are probably familiar with at least one famous literary victim of mercury poisoning: the Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. His defining and most memorable characteristics were insanity and cognitive dysfunction, and “madness” was representative of mercury poisoning. Hatters at the time used mercury to cure felt, and often exhibited deteriorating mental conditions, neurological damage, and odd tics (which led to the coining of the phrase “mad as a hatter”) and the profession had notably high early mortality rates.
The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology says of mercury:
“Mercury is the most toxic, non-radioactive element on the earth. Most medical and scientific researchers have called for a ban on the use of mercury in all products. However, the potential harmful effects of mercury fillings have been ignored by the U.S. Government. Due to its poisonous nature, mercury can adversely affect the immune, urinary, cardiac, respiratory and digestive systems. Under laboratory conditions, mercury has produced brain cell deterioration identical to that seen in victims of Alzheimer’s disease.”
– International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology: Patient FAQs
In Healing the Gerson Way, Charlotte Gerson wrote that
“Mercury fillings should never be used… damage [is] caused by releasing small amounts of mercury into the system by chewing, drinking and swallowing. These small but continuously released amounts of what is a potent nerve toxin are also absorbed by the lungs and the linings of the digestive system into the bloodstream, leading to severe harm.”
– Charlotte Gerson, Healing the Gerson Way, page 103.
Yet despite all this, for decades the dental industry has obstinately denied that mercury amalgam fillings pose any danger to their patients. Dentists say that the mercury exposure from fillings is minimal, though the levels of mercury exposure deemed “safe” are either not specified, or seem to vary from report to report, and largely concerning mercury toxicity from seafood consumption or workplace exposure. (Note: the type of mercury found in seafood is a more acutely toxic type called methyl mercury. It differs from the elemental mercury used in amalgams, which is absorbed more slowly, and therefore typically causes damage through long-term exposure rather than isolated incidents of exposure or ingestion).
Mercury certainly isn’t something you want in your mouth, especially just a few inches from your brain. If you are blessed with perfect cavity-free teeth, congratulations! (And do your best to keep them that way). But if, like many adults, you do have metal fillings, you might be worrying…
“But I Have Mercury Fillings in My Mouth! What Should I Do?”
Ultimately, of course, they should be removed.
When and how to remove them may need to be determined on a case-by-case basis, especially if you are currently on the Gerson Therapy. It may come as a surprise to some, but it is not recommended to have mercury amalgams removed in the early stages of the Gerson Therapy. All known methods of removing amalgam fillings can result in some ingestion of the mercury, and it is recommended to wait approximately 6-9 months after starting the Therapy to have them removed to avoid further toxicity. When the patient is further along in the healing process and has detoxified some of the toxins in the rest of their body, then they can have the fillings removed by a holistic/biological dentist.
Safe Amalgam Removal
For more details about having mercury fillings safely removed, please watch the video below, from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). The video shows how to eliminate excess exposure to mercury when removing amalgam fillings, and strategies for reducing the amount of mercury exposure to both patients and dental staff during amalgam removal.
IAOMT represents a network of dental, medical, and research professionals with members in North America and affiliated chapters in over fourteen other countries. They have been researching the damage dental mercury inflicts on the environment and humans since the non-profit organization was created in 1984.

Hi, it’s great to see this article. I had my mercury fillings removed in two sessions, in the UK, by Marina Carew at the Lavender Barn, Brewers End, Takeley, Essex CM22 6QJ, if anyone in the UK is looking for somewhere. I later searched for a mercury-free dentist closer to home, and found that one dentist told me it isn’t possible to get a mercury-free dentist as an NHS (National Health Service) patient. This is incorrect. I’m now registered with a dentist as an NHS patient, and they adamantly do not have any mercury in their surgery. One of the earlier dentists there was from Sweden, where I think it is completely banned.
I had my first MS attack directly after a dentist drilled straight into my mercury filled tooth with no safety precautions. I had my 2nd MS attack not even a month after the first one. This was even after I told him that I wanted to eventually remove all of my amalgam fillings because I knew some of the dangers of mercury. I wish I had known that I needed a holistic dentist. I didn’t know what was going on at the time (my body went numb from head to toe for a few weeks, and then my left arm and left leg went limp for about a week). I had an MRI and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. That was almost exactly 3 years ago. I have been fighting my MS with food, prayer, and detox, but I still have a few fillings that need to be removed, and I’m not sure when to do it. Finances are an issue, but also timing is in question. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Pattie! So sorry to hear of your health struggles. I can’t give you specific advice, I’m afraid, but I can try to point you in the right direction! A Gerson patient usually needs to wait about 6-9 months on the therapy until having their amalgams removed. I would recommend finding a holistic dentist who will be able to consult with you personally and address your specific health concerns. The IAOMT has a directory of dentists who perform non-toxic mercury removals, you can check their website and see if there’s a dentist in your area who can help you: http://iaomt.org/find-a-doctor/search-for-dentist-physician/
I haven’t been exactly on the Gerson Therapy (even though that would be my 1st choice in treatment, it’s just not possible right now), so I have been eating mostly raw fruits and veggies, juicing as much as I can (1-4 juices a day), and detoxing with up-side-down coffees twice a day– morning and evening. I like to call it my super slow, modified Gerson Therapy. (o: How long would you suggest I do this before mercury removal?
Since I’m not a dentist or doctor myself, I really can’t offer that kind of personal/medical advice, I’m so sorry! Please feel free to contact our Education Team, they’d be happy to speak to you and offer any additional assistance they can. https://gerson.org/contact-us

I had a tooth pulled because of the research findings. I have had the filling for 19 years. Figure it is worth giving up the whole tooth (back molar) than to have a dead tooth from a root canal or fragments from removal. Guess I will find out! Been murcury free for about a month. Feels strange not to have the tooth there but hoping it will help my overall health.
Hello I Am 35 years old and since I was 14 years old I started having cavities filled with mercury, I have about 14 mercury fillings in my mouth plus few of these are entirely warped with mercury as a way to save my tooth and one is half broken, I have been always concerned about the danger of filling mercury but my dentist continuosly and firmely said thy he was attending te best seminars and studies which were saying that were not harmfully at all. I have lots of allergies and my immune system is often very low, I am going to a biological doctor to have my amalgams removed but do you think that removing all of the amalgams in my mouth can now harm even more , becase of all the emmission in once of the gases , altough if removed jn the safetiest way possible, than keeping them in my mouth! I am afraid that I can suddenly get more sick! Thanks for your help!

Hi! This article has made me look back and question if my daughter’s epilepsy was due to her fillings. My daughter had dental problems from her first tooth and had fillings since she was three years old. When she was five years old she was diagnosed with petite mall epilepsy and was treated with drugs. When she was 12 she was declared epilepsy free and I was told that she just out grew it, but now I look back and realized that every time she lost one of her mercury filled baby teeth she improved. By 12 she had lost all of her baby teeth. Now she is a happy, healthy 21 year old with no fillings but I wonder if her dentist knew what he put her through.
I’ve had 17 amalgams and 2 nickel crowns replaced and have been detoxing since 2002 and NO longer have Fibromyalgia! I was also a welder for 22 years, so I was a walking TOXIC time bomb. I haven’t worn a watch in about 35 years because when I pick one up – it STOPS! I used to be able to pick up a light bulb and it would light up… Now (at 69) I have a quality of life BACK that I never expected to enjoy! Jan Jenson, retired in gorgeous central NC.
Hi. After watching the beautiful truth i decided to have my mercury amalgams removed . My dentist removed threeby drilling straight into them with no protection . He also suggested a root canal after an extraction and when i said this was all wrong he more or less said i was talking rubbish

I had 18 mercury fillings for several decades. They caused depression, suicidal ideation, quick anger, allergies. My brother was a suicide–he had many mercury fillings, too. There was a lot of detox to go through when I had mine removed many years ago, but so worth it. The dental leadership people should be in jail.
Hello, I am a mother of 2 and I was saddened and horrified when my daughter had to have a couple of filings at the dentist but he failed to inform me that he was using Mercury. When I found out they still use it I contacted his office. I cried for days and felt like the worst person in the world to allow a dentist to do this to her. I regret that I did not research it and find out sooner that dentist still use mercury. I contacted her dentist and informed him that I am disgusted and terrified that he put poison in my child’s mouth without my consent. He tried to assure me it was safe and that he has a bachelor degree in Biology and Chemistry. My response was “Oh really? So you should know exactly what you did, and you should also know that mercury is the most toxic non radioactive metal known to man and you still use it?” I asked him, how is it stored? His response was carefully, away from water and handled and disposed of carefully. So I asked, “if it is that dangerous, how does it change from toxic, hazardous, to safe in someones mouth. It makes me sick that they still do this. When I told him I wanted the filings out, he said it would cost about 8,000$ to have the filings removed and filled. Then there are the dangers removing it and I quite frankly do not trust that this doctor would know anything about removal and could endanger my daughter further. Very difficult situation, small town and not a whole lot of options either, its really devastating. I am thankful that she is getting her adult teeth now and the baby teeth with the filings are falling out, God bless you Charlotte and your father! You are true heroes!
So sad. I have one filing from childhood. I am now 46 years old and have an ICD pacemaker because of mercury poisioning! I did not know that the toxicity would pose danger to my heart after all this time! Thank God your daughter will lose that tooth before it can do the most damage. God Bless!
You have a bad dentist. Seek another dentist in a nearby town, if necessary. $8000 is crazy and a figure he just gave you to shut you up. I actually just had a filling removed in 2/13 and I live in NJ close to NYC so prices are higher than other areas. I had a crack in one of my mercury fillings and so I wanted it taken out and had a resin composite (white filling) put it. Do you know how much it cost? It was a grand total of $310 for that filling. If you are really concerned, go to another dentist and have them remove it. It will not cost you that much. I actually went to a holistic dentist in my area. But I also know that a regular dentist I had previously gone to also removes the mercury. Check this site out for dentists in your area. https://iaomt.org/find-a-doctor/search-for-dentist-physician/. Anyway, good luck.
I have a mouth full of amalgum fillings. I consider having them removed but I hate that sort of dental work and I worry that the removal will be more detrimental than leaving them alone at this point. What about teeth that have been crowned, am I still being poisoned by the mercury in the fillings of those stumps below the crown? If they must stay what can I do to avoid agitating the mercury? I am not on Gerson Therapy, should I consider starting it for a period of time before having them removed?
Hi everyone im just learning in shock that mercury may be in my fillings. And it could well explain a number of health problems over the years, and im new to the gerson therapy which i will be looking into more over the coming days. I see a few people mention having their mercury fillings out after doing the therapy course. As i am not currently on the gerson therapy as im only just learning about it, would it be wise to get these fillings checked and removed before the gerson therapy instead of waiting for months after? And also would anyone in the UK be able to recommend some good dentists to remove said mercury fillings safely? Im in the south in surrey.
Thanks
Matt

Removing mercury amalgams from your mouth is ONLY eliminating a major
source of mercury leaching into the body. The next step is to get help
to rid the body of its mercury burden.Only by following a standard procedure in this, you will get the real benefit.
Go though http://www.drwolch.com/mercury-amalgam-removal.html to get detailed information for doing this.
I have at least ten fillings. Yeah, I didn’t believe the dentist when she told me to brush, and I paid the price for it. The hefty price. I have no idea if it’s related, but I can’t think straight. My brain is sort of always running hot and it didn’t used to be, I mean the depression was there but now it’s sort of endless mood swings and not making sense when i talk to friends. I’m kind of a nervous wreck where I used to play it cool all the time, and I have to write things down before I say them or it all comes out as a mess. I don’t know how much is the mercury’s fault, or how much is my skewed view of how I used to be, since I can’t tell what’s going on half the time!
Find a biologic dentist at http://www.iaomt.org. Roughly 20 percent of the population has genetic factors that make them not clear mercury well, and they get mercury poisoned over time. What you are describing is similar to what many people with low-level mercury poisoning describe. You will also want to find a doctor who has experience working with patients in this area. You may be able to get some doctors’ names to consider from a biologic dentist.
Metal silver teeth are ugly
Hi, – i just called my dentist to ask about how many silver. found out i have 3 fillings so i asked how much would it cost to remove the fillings and get the white fillings and she (the secretary) said she thought 100.00 per tooth but she would have to call me back. She calls me back right away and says she talked to the Dentist and he said they would not remove and replace the fillings period and that it was unethical and against the National Dental association. I told her i felt that was just wrong – i felt like he (the dentist must not have adequate facility to preform removal? How can he tell me this?
The woman sounded angry when telling me this. So I am now in search of a new dentist and a holistic one at that.
Go to http://www.iaomt.org, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, and put your zip code into Find a Dentist/Doctor.
I was told by my Dentist that on Medicaid, they don’t approve anything (fillings) on the back teeth other then silver fillings
